How the tip is calculated
tip = bill × (tip % ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ number of people
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ number of people
Tip norms vary by country and service type — 15–20% is typical at U.S. sit-down restaurants, while many other countries have no tipping expectation or include a service charge automatically. Check your receipt for an existing "service charge" line before adding a full tip on top.
Convention varies, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more common practice in the U.S. This calculator uses whatever "bill amount" you enter, so use the pre-tax subtotal if that's your preference.
In the U.S., 15–20% is standard for sit-down service, 20%+ for excellent service, and 10% or less for counter service. Delivery drivers are often tipped a flat $3–5 or 10–15%.
