    How discounts are calculated

    sale price = original × (1 − discount% ÷ 100)
    original price = sale price ÷ (1 − discount% ÷ 100)

    Stacked discounts multiply, they don't add: 25% off followed by an extra 20% off is not 45% off — it's a combined discount of 1 − (0.75 × 0.80) = 40%.

Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. On a $120 item, 25% off brings it to $90; an extra 20% off $90 is $18, landing at $72 — a 40% total discount, not 45%.
